A psychology study of a culture-bound syndrome in Malaysia, in which persons who have been noticed to startle readily and strongly are repetitively startled by others until they become extremely flustered. Shows how these hyperstartling people, called latahs, may say things which are normally tabooed, match the movements of others around them, and obey commands.
